Mystery The Mercenaries: Blood Diamonds by P. W. Storm It’s a complete mystery to me why this is filed under fantasy on my local library catalogue and this is the ebook catalogue nonetheless. The book cover also doesn’t speak fantasy either. Technically this is not a mystery like I usually read but a thriller aboutContinue reading “Moonlake’s Book Discoveries: March 2024”

Moonlake’s Book Discoveries- December 2023
Fantasy A girl called Corpse by Reece Carter This is actually a juvenile fantasy but I’m drawn by the blurb. And I quite enjoyed the story. If you like heartwarming stories I think this will be exactly your cup of tea. The Last Mapmaker by Christina Soontornvat This Thai fantasy is quite interesting. I didn’tContinue reading “Moonlake’s Book Discoveries- December 2023”
Moonlake’s Book Discoveries- September 2023
Fantasy Venom’s Taste by Lisa Smedman I haven’t read a Forgotten Realms novel for quite some while ever since they turned the whole from high magic to low. And I picked this up purely because I know the author from the Shadowrun setting and the blurb reads all right. And I’m not disappointed. This isContinue reading “Moonlake’s Book Discoveries- September 2023”
Moonlake’s Book Discoveries: June 2023
Fantasy The Lyonesse trilogy by Jack Vance My final verdict upon my second reading is that I like the trilogy enough but I don’t really love it, hence why I couldn’t remember much about it. But I think a younger me probably did enjoy how whimsical the whole trilogy is (it does contain dark themesContinue reading “Moonlake’s Book Discoveries: June 2023”
Moonlake’s Book Discoveries: March 2023
Fantasy Storm Front by Jim Butcher A lot of the people I know really liked this series so I picked it up. For me, it was okay but I didn’t love it. Not sure whether that was my issue with audiobooks again after a lapse but it’s not really holding my attention despite me usingContinue reading “Moonlake’s Book Discoveries: March 2023”
Moonlake’s Book Discoveries- December 2022
Back to more of a balance between fantasy and mystery this quarter. Fantasy The Spellwright Trilogy by Blake Charlton This is basically a standalone trilogy starring three different protagonists. I liked book 1- for a fantasy, the prophecy thing that surrounds the protagonist was twisted a couple of times making this a bit fresh andContinue reading “Moonlake’s Book Discoveries- December 2022”
Moonlake’s Book Discoveries- September 2022
Before we get to the good stuff, I’ve apparently already finished 31 books this year. Woohoo! And my gaming group has finally come back together after a long hiatus and we are running a Shadowrun game so I’m reading quite a fair bit of the novels in that setting to get up to speed. FantasyContinue reading “Moonlake’s Book Discoveries- September 2022”
Audiobooks- new uncharted waters
I think it was late last night but someone threw up a link to scientific research on how reading physical books and listening to audiobooks activate the same region in the brain whereas reading ebooks activates a different region. That coupled with my interest in Fionavar Tapestry by Guy Gavriel Kay which is only availableContinue reading “Audiobooks- new uncharted waters”

Fantasy Labyrinth Gate by Kate Elliott I actually spent a long while foraging through my local library website before I settled on this. I do like the setup where each chapter is named for a tarot card but I only like the story so-so. I guess this is more of a romance-fantasy (portal fantasy withContinue reading “Moonlake’s Book Discoveries- June 2022”
Moonlake’s Book Discoveries- March 2022
Fantasy: The Liveship Traders Trilogy by Robin Hobb In terms of characters, I think I can easily feel for Wintrow. Althea at the start was a bit too headstrong for me except when she faced off with Kyle in book 1 and when she showed her determination for her cause. Same with Malta who startedContinue reading “Moonlake’s Book Discoveries- March 2022”
